Why We Hosted a DIAPER BASH and How to Host One For YOUR Hubby

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned hosting a "diaper bash" as a way to help make sure you get the most out of your baby registry, (if you missed that blog post, for sure check it out ASAP!) and I promised to elaborate on this topic a bit more, so here we are!

So just what the heck IS a "diaper bash" anyways, right?? Basically it's a way for your hubby to feel a bit more included in the excitement of the shower, without having to be at the shower (let's face it, those are for girls LOL).... a "manly shower" if you will. Diaper bashes are typically put on by YOU, the expecting couple, but expenses are minimal and the return is far worth the time and effort. Not to mention I'm betting that big burly husband of yours will be giddy on the inside knowing there's an event just for him celebrating him becoming a dad. The fun part is that you can theme this event based on your husband's interests! I've seen fishing diaper bashes, bbq and beer diaper bashes, clay pigeon shoots, you name it!! All you have to do is pick a theme and location, send out invitations, and then provide the food and entertainment! Guests come and get to have a fun "guys night" out, and all that's required is they bring a pack of diapers for your husband. Genius right?!

So want to know how we did ours? My husband is an avid outdoorsman so we opted to host a clay pigeon shoot and called it a "Poop and Shoot" HAHA!!!

We were lucky in that his parents let us use their farm for the event, so no need to rent a location. We created a Facebook event and sent out all the invitations on there, then simply asked for the guys to RSVP so we would know how much we needed to prepare with regards to food, beverages, and clay pigeons. We provided all the clay pigeons (aka entertainment), a variety of beverages (water, soda, gatorade, beer), and then did a soup bar (it was January and cold outside LOL). I made big crockpots of chili and a delicious baked potato soup, and of course provided all the extra toppings and such to accompany the soups.

IF you're like us and will have friends / family members coming from out of town, then I'd recommend hosting the diaper bash at the same time as the lady's baby shower. We have so many friends and family members that were planning to travel several hours for the baby shower, so it only made sense to host the diaper bash for the guys at the exact same time, that way couples / families could travel together and just make one day out of it.

We ended up getting too many boxes of diapers to even count ( <--- THIS Right here is why you won't need to register for diapers), but more importantly, my husband had an absolutely wonderful time with his close friends and our family members. Something I'm sure he'll look back on fondly for years to come. It's so easy for people to focus on the "woman" when a couple is expecting, and don't get me wrong, I understand why LOL, but I think it's sad that the husband's often get forgotten and don't get celebrated as much. Sure, they aren't carrying the baby, but they're carrying the emotional support for the wife and THAT deserves a dang big round of applause.

How To Stay FIT and ACTIVE During Pregnancy

Pregnant and struggling with the changes with regards to exercise? Trust me, I get it. Almost immediately I felt a HUGE change in lung capacity (my doctor explained the breathlessness feeling is due to our bodies making / having so much extra blood during pregnancy), and also started noticing my joints felt pretty loosey goosey. Simple yoga poses that I've been practicing for years became challenging, and don't even get me started on complex lunges and squats. I have bad knees anyways (old sports injuries) but the relaxin hormone has made me extremely leery of doing anything other than plain old walking lunges and regular squats until I hit my post partum journey LOL!!

To say workouts have changed a bit due to pregnancy would be an understatement ðŸ˜‚ I'm use to fast paced, high impact, heavy weight workouts and while I tried to continue that during pregnancy (hey, some women can rock it with no problems) my body just wasn't down with that.

So how can you stay fit and active during pregnancy if your body is giving you cues to slow down?? I'm certainly not an expert, but here's what I've learned from my experience thus far:

1. First and foremost LISTEN to your body. It will let you know when you need to take a break, when to go for a walk instead of a run, or when to crush out a more intense workout. I've found being in tune with your body can make a world of difference in how you feel about your workouts.

2. If you're dealing with intense nausea then give yourself grace and make your goals smaller and more attainable. Shoot for just 10-15 minutes of activity. When you have to keep up with regular life responsibilities AND are constantly throwing up, even just a 5 or 10 minute walk can make a world of difference. Getting some fresh air and some natural Vitamin D really helped me early on in the first trimester. I'd shoot for a walk every afternoon and it quickly became something I really looked forward to, as I was typically feeling a bit better by that point in the day.

3. Find a prenatal exercise class!! Whether it's in person or online (I prefer this online program so I could run to my own bathroom for potty breaks and nausea LOL) it is important you learn what exercises and poses are best for prenatal workouts, and which ones to stay away from for safety purposes. (IF you need help in this arena, send me an email. I'm an open book and happy to help.)

4. Branch out with your workouts! Like I mentioned earlier I was use to lifting heavy weights and doing high impact cardio, but after taking cues from my body I switched it up to fast paced walks and tons of prenatal yoga ðŸ’•I It   Learning to be okay with the change in workouts was something I struggled with, but once I focused on the fact that my body is literally creating life and preparing for the ultimate fitness test, then I began enjoying my new workout routines.

5. For the love, spend the extra money and get some comfortable maternity leggings, tanks, and bras. I tried to squeeze into my regular clothes for too long and when I finally switched to maternity gear, it made an immediate improvement in my comfort and range of motion!! My all time favorites for comfort are hands down the Blanqi maternity leggings (order a size up btw), and my favorites for compression / workout type are from the Old Navy Maternity line.

Above all else, please remember to give yourself some grace. You're growing a human, and that is no small feat! ðŸ’ªYou got this, Momma!! ðŸ˜˜

What Was on My Baby Registry

Hey hey hey, Friends!! I've had several questions about what I registered for and why, so I decided it was time for a TELL ALL! 💓

If you've read my previous posts regarding all things pregnancy related then you know I'm just a FTM trying to figure it all out, so my hope is that this post helps another FTM, or at least provides some insight if you're working on your own baby registry. 😊

As a first time parent, it can be insanely overwhelming when you dive into the world of baby products. So many retailers (and people) will tell you what they think you need, or what you should register for; so hands down please know it's okay to register for what YOU want for you and your baby. Don't ever feel pressured to use something just because your sister's best friend used it and she looved it. What works for some people, may not work for you and vice versa.

In our case, we decided we wanted to take a somewhat minimalist approach to our registry because A) we live in a smaller home, and B) if you aren't careful you can easily register for waaaaay too much and won't end up getting the true essentials. That being said, our registry still had several items on it - 96 now to be exact!! <-- a lot of those were requested duplicates so we could stock up on various items (example: 5 tubs of baby lotion, 3 jars of nipple cream, 3 packs of breastmilk storage bags, etc).

So you're probably reading this going okay okay, just give us the goods already!! I've categorized the items and linked to the products, so without further ado, let's jump in!!

FEEDING - Honestly, anything related to feeding will really be based on YOUR preferences. We are planning to breastfeed (Lord-willing) so I wanted to stock up on supplies for that. (You'll notice I did not have an electric breast pump listed here and that's because my insurance paid for mine so I didn't need to register for it.)

With regards to breastfeeding itself, I registered for Burp Cloths (specifically these, these, and these) and LOTS of them as my closest friends said some days you can go through several, a Boppy Nursing Pillow (with waterproof cover and a patterned cover), a Nursing Cover that duals as a carseat cover, and the NatureBond Silicone Manual Pump to catch let down (don't want to waste any of that precious liquid gold LOL).

I do plan to pump a bit to help build up a storage of milk for when the Grandparents babysit for us, or for those times when Hubby really wants to bond with baby and feed her a bottle. So to prepare for that area of feeding I registered for Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags (x3 because I wanted to stock up), NUK Simply Natural Bottles (both a 3 pack of 5 oz and a 3 pack of 9 oz), the Kiinde Kozii Bottle and Breastmilk Warmer (as it's made specifically to safely warm breastmilk), a Bottle Cleaning Brush, a Bottle Drying Rack, and Dapple Baby Bottle and Dish Liquid Soap.

Finally, a tip from some of my other momma friends was to also register for a few feeding items you'd need once baby is a few months older and ready to start learning some new skills. So we registered for the Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair because it literally saves sooo much space in the dining room, the NUK Learner Cup, and of course Bandana Drool Bibs because they're so much cuter than the old school bibs.

DIAPERING - This all depends on whether you choose to use disposable diapers or cloth diapers, and as you can tell, we opted for disposable. So first and foremost we chose the Munchkin Diaper Pail for our nursery and also registered for refills (x2) and scent discs (x2). Though you don't necessarily need a diaper pail this was something we decided we'd like to use. You'll also likely want a Changing Pad and a few extra Changing Pad Covers (we registered for this and this). We did choose to register for Amazon Elements Baby Wipes (x2), along with a variety of ointments for diaper rash - Boudreaux's Butt Paste (x2) and A+D Ointment or Aquaphor (x3). Last but not least, don't forget about your Diaper Bag!! We LOVE ours!

BATHING / SKIN CARE - We have opted to skip a few of the more popular brands for baby skin care simply due to our own preference, however, should you wish to do your own research on various brands, products, or the ingredients then I would highly recommend you visit EWG's database. That being said, the basics for us includes: a Bath Tub, a Hooded Bath Towel, Bamboo Baby Washcloths, and Shea Butter (x5). For the first little bit we plan to only use water when bathing our sweet girl, so we opted to use Norwex Baby Washcloths (antimicrobial and antibacterial), and once we're ready to use some baby soap, we've opted for Earth Mama Calming Baby Soap (x2). Last but not least, don't forget to stock up on some Badger Baby Sunscreen (x2).

BEDDING - This one is pretty simple these days, thanks to the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for safe sleep (skip the bulky crib bumpers and quilts, baby just needs a flat surface free of extra blankets or stuffed animals). We already had a crib, purchased our own mattress, and my talented mother made a crib skirt for us that matched our theme, so we didn't need a whole lot in this area. We opted for Waterproof Crib Mattress Protectors (x2 so you have an extra clean one to throw on for those middle of the night diaper explosions) and four Crib Sheets (we registered for this, this, this, and this). We also registered for a Graco Pack 'n Play to use as a bassinet during the first few months (as well as while traveling). Last but not least we registered for a pack of the Halo Sleepsacks (x2) as they come highly recommended to help soothe baby for a restful sleep.

NURSERY - We opted to purchase several of the larger items needed for the nursery ourselves (rug, dresser, curtains, bookshelf, etc), BUT we did put our Rocking Chair (this one is SO comfortable!!) on the registry with the intent of using our 15% off discount and buying it ourselves. Low and behold, someone bought it FOR us for Christmas, so if there are larger items you want but maybe can't afford right away, then perhaps put them on your registry as well. You never know who might purchase those for you. Other items we registered for in this category included a Hamper, a Cool Mist Humidifier with Replacement Filters, some Baby Hangers (did you know baby clothes don't fit on regular hangers?!), and some Dresser Organizer Drawer Dividers.

SAFETY / HEALTH CARE - We chose this Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor for our own reasons, so please make sure to do your research on which one will best fit your home and lifestyle. Additional items we wanted to stock up on in this department included: Philips AVENT Soothie Pacifiers (x2), a Forehead Thermometer, some Gas Relief Drops, Infants Tylenol, and an Amber Teething Necklace. We wanted to make sure we were prepared with some of the basics should a need arise.

GEAR - This category might not seem as fun initially, but we enjoyed looking at all the options and choosing what would fit our home and lifestyle best. First things first, you should absolutely register for a carseat / stroller combo (these are known as travel systems). We registered for the Graco Modes Jogger Travel System (comes with one carseat, one base, and one jogger stroller) due to it's good reviews for runners, and of course registered for one Extra Car Seat Base so we can keep a base in both of our vehicles. You'll also likely want a set of Car Baby Mirrors (x2), and depending on your vehicle, potentially some Car Window Visors. Other "gear" we chose included the MamaRoo (due to space saving size and functions), an Activity Play Mat (for tummy time), a Bouncer / Saucer, and a Tula Carrier.

FOR MOM / POSTPARTUM - I think a lot of us FTMs forget about these items when registering, but trust me when I say you'll want these on your registry LOL!! For postpartum care in general, I opted for Depends Fit-Flex Disposable Underwear and TUCKS Medicated Cooling Pads. I'll likely have to pick up some other items as needed, but I feel better having these ready to go! Other things you're going to need, and items I registered for included: a pack of Nursing Bras, some Nursing Tanks, Lansinoh Soothies Gel Pads, Lansinoh Disposable Nursing Pads (x3), and some Earth Mama Angel Baby Organic Nipple Butter (x3).

FUN MISC: - It's always fun to include some extra little items on your registry so we opted for a few Floral Swaddles (this one and this one), a Pack of Headbands, a Baby Daily Log Book, and of course the What to Expect the First Year book.

Items we chose not to register for - You likely noticed there were several typical baby items that we didn't register for so I figured I'd hit those real quick and explain why. We didn't register for a crib because we got a hand-me-down from my SIL and it was exactly the type and color we were looking for. We also didn't register for nursery decor as we chose to purchase that ourselves, BUT if you're working on a registry, I would strongly encourage you to consider adding some of the big ticket items to your registry (rug, crib, dresser, curtains, etc) as you just never know if someone might purchase those for you. You probably also noticed we didn't register for diapers and that was due to two factors: 1) there's a killer diaper fundraiser in our hometown so we stocked up on those way in advance for around $2 per pack (score!), and 2) we hosted a "Diaper Bash" for my husband and his friends to fill in any gaps (more on that in my next post). Lastly, we also didn't register for clothes, simply because people will give you clothes regardless AND because a friend of mine has twin girls just about a year older than what ours will be, so I was able to purchase tons of great quality hand-me-downs from her.

I hope you have just as much fun curating your Baby Registry as I did with ours! As always, do your own research and choose products and brands that YOU feel comfortable with. Happy researching!!

How to Get the MOST out of Your BABY REGISTRY

If you're currently pregnant or even if you're just trying to conceive, you're probably already starting to wonder about the BABY REGISTRY and all things related to it!

"Which registry should we use? Should we register with multiple retailers? What items should I put on the registry? ...Oh man...now I'm feeling overwhelmed thinking about researching said items. When should I start my registry? When do I share my registry?"

The list goes on and on LOL! I had so many questions and learned a lot from my own research, polling mommy friends, and just general trial and error. That being said, here are my top tips to get the MOST out of your registry.

1. Only register with one site (i.e. Amazon, Target, Walmart, Buy Buy Baby, etc.) I preferred Amazon for many reasons (free shipping, 15% completion discount, free welcome box, $100 in free diapers and rewards, large selection of items, and universal registry), but if you want all the deets on that, please see my previous post here about WHY we chose Amazon for our Baby Registry.

Why register with just one site? Two important reasons; ONE, it helps YOU stay organized knowing everything is all together on one site and avoids duplicates or confusion. TWO, it honestly makes it easier for gift givers to have just one place to go look instead of looking at two or three different registries. Plus in my opinion, if a gift giver has just one registry to look at then they are more apt to purchase something from the registry, where as when there are multiple registries, they often end up just buying a similar item to what they saw on one of the registries instead of the exact item you registered for.

2. Do your homework and start your registry early. If you're anything like me, you'll want to do your own research on the various products, decide what you want to use for YOUR baby, and then start curating your registry. If you wait to do this until a few weeks before your shower, you'll find yourself overwhelmed and scrambling to throw a registry together. Not my idea of fun! Instead, start your registry (and research) early on! Just because you've opened your registry doesn't mean you have to tell anyone it exists just yet. I started mine before my first trimester was even over and spent several weeks researching various items and products. Added Bonus - starting it early allows you time to change your mind. Add a floor based high chair, but decided you'd rather have a space saver high chair? No big deal, simply add and delete, and no one will know.

3. Register for the big ticket items and keep clothes, diapers, and wipes off the registry entirely. Say what?! I know, when most people start thinking about their registry they immediately want to register for diapers, wipes, and all the adorable baby clothes. Trust me, I get it. BUT, also trust me when I say I've thrown my fare share of baby showers so I feel pretty seasoned regarding this area. So WHY do this? You're going to get a ton of diapers, wipes, and clothes at your baby shower and for gifts in general regardless, even if they aren't on your registry. So if your registry focuses on bigger ticket items that you really need, then that gives gift givers the hint to strongly consider another item (i.e. your swing, your carrier, etc). Watch for my next post which will be a tell all on what all we registered for and why!

4. Following up on that notion, ask for the following phrase to be included on your baby shower invitation, "Baby is well clothed, please see the registry for much NEEDED items." This simple phrase makes a world of difference in whether you receive just a few items from your registry and then a bunch of useless junk you didn't register for, or a whole slew of items from your registry. Let's face it, no one wants to be the pregnant lady forced to haul in loads of returns because they didn't get what they requested on their registry.

**Another tip: for any shower I've ever thrown, and for the shower my besties threw me, we added a small extra slip of paper in with the invitation that read as follows: "One small request, that won't be too hard, please bring a book in place of a card. Whether Cat in the Hat or Winnie the Pooh, you can sign the inside with a note from you. Your book will be cherished whether old or brand new, but please don't feel obliged, we'll leave it up to you."  <-- this is equally as HUGE! First and foremost, books are cheaper than Hallmark cards these days, and second, why not use the event to start your nursery library!

5. Be vocal! Once you feel pretty solid with your registry selections, start being somewhat vocal about it! Not in a pushy, greedy, or annoying way, but when the opportunity presents itself, don't be afraid to voice your opinion. I can't tell you how many times someone asked us what we "really" needed with reference to gifts, and it was so much easier for us to just say, "whatever is left on the registry! We carefully selected items we truly need." You'll also encounter your fare share of opinions. Everyone has one and as soon as they find out you're pregnant, they'll be dying to tell you all about their opinion and why they're getting you the such and such product because they loved it so much and YOU MUST have it too. Kindly respond and just let them know it's so generous of them to think of you, but you and your husband have done your own research and have registered specifically for xyz because it best suits your lifestyle, your parenting style, and your needs. For example, we live in a pretty small house with very small rooms so we registered for dual purpose or compact items and tried to be as minimalist as possible. When someone complained about our "space saver high chair" and said they were going to buy us the large floor based one anyways, we simply said, "look, we registered for the space saver because it attaches to a chair that's already in our home, we literally do not have room for a floor based high chair."

**Along the lines of being vocal - when it IS time for your shower, I would encourage you to ask your hostess to create a "save the date" Facebook event so you can invite everyone a few months before the shower. Why? Obviously, A) so they get a heads up and can save the date since invitations typically only go out 4-6 weeks in advance, and B) it's a great place to note your registry so folks can start shopping it early, or save up if they wish to purchase one of your bigger items.

Whew! In a nutshell, create just ONE registry, start early and do your own research, don't register for clothes or diapers, and when approached about your registry or items, be vocal! Following these tips we received 86 of the 96 items on our registry (high number of items on registry due to requesting several duplicates - i.e. 3 packs of nursing pads or 5 tubs of baby lotion), have only had to make a few high ticket purchases ourselves, and also still have more than enough clothes, diapers, and wipes. Win win!

I really hope this was helpful for some of you, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! I'm already working on my next post which will be highlighting my registry must-haves and registry no-nos.
