Top Favorite Baby Products for Baby's First Month

I'm baaaack! It's been a month since our little miss graced this world with her presence, and now that I have a little bit more time between feedings, I wanted to sit down and write about my top favorite baby products thus far. You guys all saw my registry and read about the various reasons we chose one product over another, etc, but now that we've had a bit of time to legit test out products, I figured I should follow up and provide some legit reviews! So let's just dive right in!

HaloVa Backpack Diaper Bag - I looooove this diaper bag! We knew we wanted a backpack diaper bag and this one doesn't disappoint! It has several inside pockets, a back access flap, insulated pocket for bottle storage, the mouth opens wide, and it can hold a TON of stuff! I'd purchase it again in a heart beat and would highly recommend it to friends!

Log Book - most people prefer to use an app, and I can understand that in this digital age, BUT this log book works well for us so we can track other items / trends as well. It's been super helpful for us these first few weeks!

NatureBond Milk Saver - once your milk comes on you may or may not notice you leak a TON on the opposite side while feeding, at least I do. I saw this recommended in a Facebook group I'm in and I'm so glad I purchased this! I catch an average of 1-2 ounces on the opposite side and throughout the day can collect enough for a bottle that can be used in the middle of the night when Dad wants to do a feed so Mom can sleep a few hours.

Nipple Cream - a lot of women prefer lanolin, and that's totally fine, but this nipple butter has been my saving grace! If you're a FTM then you've likely read that the first few days or week can be tough breastfeeding as you break in your virgin nips, but not many talk about how legit awful it can be. My first week was spent with blistered, cracked, bleeding nipples and I lathered this stuff on religiously after every feeding and any time I felt like they were dry. I continue to use it daily and keep one at my nursing station in the nursery and one in the diaper bag for on the go. Win win!

Dapple Dish Soap - a friend recommended this and it's seriously been one of my favorite staples! It comes with an easy pump, and we have it sitting at the sink for quick access to wash pacifiers, bottles, etc.

Burp Rags - we've recently started going through multiple burp rags per day and my FAV are the Gerber cloth diapers! They're way more absorbent than any of the other ones we have, and we have an entire drawer full LOL!

Sound Machine - we had read about various sound machines / white noise machines but didn't purchase one ahead of time as we weren't sure if we'd need it or not. It wasn't until we were at our newborn photo shoot and we saw our photographer use one during the shoot that we realized just how freaking MAGICAL these things are! We legit ordered the exact model our photographer had while at the shoot and our girl LOVES it! I love that it's portable and has a built in timer!

Boppy - alright, I have mixed feelings on the Boppy breastfeeding pillow. It's SUPER helpful and gives your arms a bit of relief when nursing, and is also pretty wonderful for Dad or Grandma to use when just holding the baby, BUT I really wish I would have also purchased the "My Brest Friend" nursing pillow as it truly provides proper positioning for a good latch and a good nursing session. My cousin recommended it and I should have purchased it ahead of time, I think it would have saved me quite a bit of pain in the beginning. So if you have to choose between the two, go with the My Brest Friend for sure! Which leads me to my next topic, items I wish I would have registered for...

After some actual product use and some trial and error, I have found a few other Items I wish I would've purchased beforehand / registered for:

Dock A Tot or the Snuggle Me Lounger- holy moly one of these would be handy if we had a larger bed / house! It basically cocoons baby and soothes them for sleep. What I've learned is you can research your hiney off and prepare for baby's sleep / lounge spaces, but baby will have their own preferences. We have a pack n play and a mamaroo thinking we'd made the best decisions, but our girl has some slight reflux so she hates laying completely flat, and she's not into the mamaroo at this point either LOL! Joke is on us! My advice? Prepare your crib space so that is ready, and then see if you can borrow a few different types of bassinets from friends once babe gets here so you can see what your babe will prefer. Once you know what your babe will like then you can purchase your own. That will save you TONS of money and quite a bit of anxiety over whether or not you purchased the right item haha!!

My Brest Friend - as stated earlier...do yourself a favor and get one of these!

Onesies with Mittens - you guys...trying to clip or file newborn nails is nearly impossible as they are so thin and flimsy, and you'd think that means they wouldn't be sharp right? WRONGO! Our girl scratched the crap out of her face and those little slip on mittens did nothing for her. She was too much of a Houdini and kept getting them off, so the only option for us was the onesies with mittens attached. Even better if you can find the side snap onesies!! These are my new favorite thing this week, so do yourself a favor and grab a 3 pack of these before your babe arrives.

Swaddles - like I mentioned earlier, you'll find you really have a lot of trial and error in the beginning trying to figure out what works for your baby to help them sleep, and you might find that what works one week may not work the next week and vice versa. We've used swaddle blankets (this brand is our favorite, we have five haha!), swaddle me pods, swaddle mes, and halo sleepsacks. So far the only thing we don't like is the halo sleepsack, but we aren't ruling it out as our girl may like it later on.

As you likely know, a lot of baby products are used in various stages, so I'll continually update you all as we progress past this 4th trimester phase and start using some of the other products we've purchased as well. Before I sign off, I did want to highlight the things we've been super grateful we had on hand and ready for the day-to-day as soon as we got home:

-tons of burp rags
-multiple changing pad covers (babies will surprise you and poop and pee all over those)
-Little Remedies Gas Drops
-lots of baby wash cloths
-tons of diapers and wipes
-tons of onesies (our girl lives in these and only puts on a cute outfit if we leave the house)
-lots of laundry detergent AND stain remover
-lots of freezer meals and quick and easy snacks
-lots of toilet paper
-pads / the post partum items

Whew! I hope you all find this helpful! As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me! I'm an open book and happy to provide reviews on other items from my registry that weren't mentioned in this post.

What's in my Hospital Bag

Hey Hey Hey Friends!!! It's been a few weeks since I've blogged and quite frankly I have zero excuse other than I've been nesting like a crazy person LOL!

I've had a few questions regarding what we're packing in our hospital bag, AND I can tell YOU that as an expecting Mom this exact topic was all consuming during my second trimester. I have no idea why, but I obsessed and obsessed over what to pack, what I really needed, what baby needed, what was too much, etc. I looked up countless articles on Pinterest, compared lists, chatted with the wonderful mommas in my due-date group on Facebook, and of course asked my best friends for their experience-based advice.

You're probably laughing at me right now, and honestly I am too LOL!! You see, I'm a typical Type-A personality - - I need to know all the details, and I mean allllll the details (HA!), I need to craft a plan / make a list, once I know something is on the horizon, there is always a sense of urgency to prepare. Not doing these things literally gives me anxiety LOL! So if you're like me, you get it, and if you aren't, then please, cut the Type-A people in your life a little slack - they're just dancing to their own beat.

All that being said, my hope is that this post will help some of you decide what to pack in YOUR hospital bag.

First up - the main decision is whether you want to feel completely pampered in your room, or if you want to go more minimalist. We chose the minimalist approach for a few reasons:

-though the delivery suites in our hospital are glorious and spacious, the recovery rooms are TINY so we don't want to trip over excess baggage...
-we also don't want to feel like we're loading up for a week long international vacation when the time comes, but instead would rather be able to grab one bag, the carseat and take our excited happy little behinds to the hospital...
-fortunately for us, we live about 5 minutes from our hospital so should we truly need anything, either Hubby can run home, or one of our parents can go grab something for us...

After you make your decision regarding minimalist or extra, the next step is to make a list of what to pack. I categorized my list in the following categories: My necessities, Hubs necessities, Baby items, and Misc. So without further ado, here's what we packed:

Mommy:
-2 pairs of pants (1 pair of yoga pants for comfort, and one pair of post partum leggings)
-1 zip up hoodie (or a cardigan)
-1 robe
-1 pair of flip flops to wear in the shower
-1 pair of slippers to wear around the hospital (totally throwing these away afterwards so I don't bring home hospital germies)
-1 pair of socks
-travel toiletries (toothbrush, glasses / contact case and solution, shampoo, conditioner, razor, lotion, deodorant, brush, hair ties, hair spray, basic makeup)

Daddy:
-2 pairs of boxers
-2 pairs of gym shorts
-1 pair of sweatpants
-2 tshirts
-1 pair of flip flops for the shower
-1 pair of socks
-travel toiletries (toothbrush, body wash, deodorant)

Baby:
-1 sleeper
-1 swaddle / matching headband for a cute photo
-1 burp rag (just in case)
-1 going home outfit
-2 pairs of mittens and baby clippers / nail file (in case she comes out with talons, HA!)
-2 hats (1 for going home, and 1 for baby to wear for a bit and then have Hubby take home to let the kitty smell so she will be familiar with baby's scent when we bring her home)
-1 blanket (for swaddling or to cover carseat on way home)

Misc:
-cards and iPad for entertainment (should we need it)
-quarters for the vending machine
-snacks (protein bars, my Mommy FUEL, and some raw nuts)
-phone chargers and earbuds
-old throw blanket (for hubby since the pullout chair he'll be sleeping in is not comfortable)
-essential oil diffuser and oils (taking lavender for calming, and peppermint should I need to smell it for nausea)

All of these items fit in a duffle bag (particularly a Thirty-One bag) the size of a carry on. I pack his and her toiletries in separate ziplock baggies for easy access. I also packed all baby items in a ziplock bag to help keep them organized (baby things are so tiny LOL). Again, I'm a hospital germophobe so I opted to pack these items in a duffle bag that can be washed when we get home versus a rolling carry-on that's much more challenging to disinfect....and that's it! After all of our research and reviewing list after list, we settled on taking just what we might truly need. Our thoughts might be different if we lived farther away from the hospital, but for us, this works well. As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! And on that note - I'm signing off!

Why We Hosted a DIAPER BASH and How to Host One For YOUR Hubby

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned hosting a "diaper bash" as a way to help make sure you get the most out of your baby registry, (if you missed that blog post, for sure check it out ASAP!) and I promised to elaborate on this topic a bit more, so here we are!

So just what the heck IS a "diaper bash" anyways, right?? Basically it's a way for your hubby to feel a bit more included in the excitement of the shower, without having to be at the shower (let's face it, those are for girls LOL).... a "manly shower" if you will. Diaper bashes are typically put on by YOU, the expecting couple, but expenses are minimal and the return is far worth the time and effort. Not to mention I'm betting that big burly husband of yours will be giddy on the inside knowing there's an event just for him celebrating him becoming a dad. The fun part is that you can theme this event based on your husband's interests! I've seen fishing diaper bashes, bbq and beer diaper bashes, clay pigeon shoots, you name it!! All you have to do is pick a theme and location, send out invitations, and then provide the food and entertainment! Guests come and get to have a fun "guys night" out, and all that's required is they bring a pack of diapers for your husband. Genius right?!

So want to know how we did ours? My husband is an avid outdoorsman so we opted to host a clay pigeon shoot and called it a "Poop and Shoot" HAHA!!!

We were lucky in that his parents let us use their farm for the event, so no need to rent a location. We created a Facebook event and sent out all the invitations on there, then simply asked for the guys to RSVP so we would know how much we needed to prepare with regards to food, beverages, and clay pigeons. We provided all the clay pigeons (aka entertainment), a variety of beverages (water, soda, gatorade, beer), and then did a soup bar (it was January and cold outside LOL). I made big crockpots of chili and a delicious baked potato soup, and of course provided all the extra toppings and such to accompany the soups.

IF you're like us and will have friends / family members coming from out of town, then I'd recommend hosting the diaper bash at the same time as the lady's baby shower. We have so many friends and family members that were planning to travel several hours for the baby shower, so it only made sense to host the diaper bash for the guys at the exact same time, that way couples / families could travel together and just make one day out of it.

We ended up getting too many boxes of diapers to even count ( <--- THIS Right here is why you won't need to register for diapers), but more importantly, my husband had an absolutely wonderful time with his close friends and our family members. Something I'm sure he'll look back on fondly for years to come. It's so easy for people to focus on the "woman" when a couple is expecting, and don't get me wrong, I understand why LOL, but I think it's sad that the husband's often get forgotten and don't get celebrated as much. Sure, they aren't carrying the baby, but they're carrying the emotional support for the wife and THAT deserves a dang big round of applause.

How To Stay FIT and ACTIVE During Pregnancy

Pregnant and struggling with the changes with regards to exercise? Trust me, I get it. Almost immediately I felt a HUGE change in lung capacity (my doctor explained the breathlessness feeling is due to our bodies making / having so much extra blood during pregnancy), and also started noticing my joints felt pretty loosey goosey. Simple yoga poses that I've been practicing for years became challenging, and don't even get me started on complex lunges and squats. I have bad knees anyways (old sports injuries) but the relaxin hormone has made me extremely leery of doing anything other than plain old walking lunges and regular squats until I hit my post partum journey LOL!!

To say workouts have changed a bit due to pregnancy would be an understatement ðŸ˜‚ I'm use to fast paced, high impact, heavy weight workouts and while I tried to continue that during pregnancy (hey, some women can rock it with no problems) my body just wasn't down with that.

So how can you stay fit and active during pregnancy if your body is giving you cues to slow down?? I'm certainly not an expert, but here's what I've learned from my experience thus far:

1. First and foremost LISTEN to your body. It will let you know when you need to take a break, when to go for a walk instead of a run, or when to crush out a more intense workout. I've found being in tune with your body can make a world of difference in how you feel about your workouts.

2. If you're dealing with intense nausea then give yourself grace and make your goals smaller and more attainable. Shoot for just 10-15 minutes of activity. When you have to keep up with regular life responsibilities AND are constantly throwing up, even just a 5 or 10 minute walk can make a world of difference. Getting some fresh air and some natural Vitamin D really helped me early on in the first trimester. I'd shoot for a walk every afternoon and it quickly became something I really looked forward to, as I was typically feeling a bit better by that point in the day.

3. Find a prenatal exercise class!! Whether it's in person or online (I prefer this online program so I could run to my own bathroom for potty breaks and nausea LOL) it is important you learn what exercises and poses are best for prenatal workouts, and which ones to stay away from for safety purposes. (IF you need help in this arena, send me an email. I'm an open book and happy to help.)

4. Branch out with your workouts! Like I mentioned earlier I was use to lifting heavy weights and doing high impact cardio, but after taking cues from my body I switched it up to fast paced walks and tons of prenatal yoga ðŸ’•I It   Learning to be okay with the change in workouts was something I struggled with, but once I focused on the fact that my body is literally creating life and preparing for the ultimate fitness test, then I began enjoying my new workout routines.

5. For the love, spend the extra money and get some comfortable maternity leggings, tanks, and bras. I tried to squeeze into my regular clothes for too long and when I finally switched to maternity gear, it made an immediate improvement in my comfort and range of motion!! My all time favorites for comfort are hands down the Blanqi maternity leggings (order a size up btw), and my favorites for compression / workout type are from the Old Navy Maternity line.

Above all else, please remember to give yourself some grace. You're growing a human, and that is no small feat! ðŸ’ªYou got this, Momma!! ðŸ˜˜

What Was on My Baby Registry

Hey hey hey, Friends!! I've had several questions about what I registered for and why, so I decided it was time for a TELL ALL! 💓

If you've read my previous posts regarding all things pregnancy related then you know I'm just a FTM trying to figure it all out, so my hope is that this post helps another FTM, or at least provides some insight if you're working on your own baby registry. 😊

As a first time parent, it can be insanely overwhelming when you dive into the world of baby products. So many retailers (and people) will tell you what they think you need, or what you should register for; so hands down please know it's okay to register for what YOU want for you and your baby. Don't ever feel pressured to use something just because your sister's best friend used it and she looved it. What works for some people, may not work for you and vice versa.

In our case, we decided we wanted to take a somewhat minimalist approach to our registry because A) we live in a smaller home, and B) if you aren't careful you can easily register for waaaaay too much and won't end up getting the true essentials. That being said, our registry still had several items on it - 96 now to be exact!! <-- a lot of those were requested duplicates so we could stock up on various items (example: 5 tubs of baby lotion, 3 jars of nipple cream, 3 packs of breastmilk storage bags, etc).

So you're probably reading this going okay okay, just give us the goods already!! I've categorized the items and linked to the products, so without further ado, let's jump in!!

FEEDING - Honestly, anything related to feeding will really be based on YOUR preferences. We are planning to breastfeed (Lord-willing) so I wanted to stock up on supplies for that. (You'll notice I did not have an electric breast pump listed here and that's because my insurance paid for mine so I didn't need to register for it.)

With regards to breastfeeding itself, I registered for Burp Cloths (specifically these, these, and these) and LOTS of them as my closest friends said some days you can go through several, a Boppy Nursing Pillow (with waterproof cover and a patterned cover), a Nursing Cover that duals as a carseat cover, and the NatureBond Silicone Manual Pump to catch let down (don't want to waste any of that precious liquid gold LOL).

I do plan to pump a bit to help build up a storage of milk for when the Grandparents babysit for us, or for those times when Hubby really wants to bond with baby and feed her a bottle. So to prepare for that area of feeding I registered for Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags (x3 because I wanted to stock up), NUK Simply Natural Bottles (both a 3 pack of 5 oz and a 3 pack of 9 oz), the Kiinde Kozii Bottle and Breastmilk Warmer (as it's made specifically to safely warm breastmilk), a Bottle Cleaning Brush, a Bottle Drying Rack, and Dapple Baby Bottle and Dish Liquid Soap.

Finally, a tip from some of my other momma friends was to also register for a few feeding items you'd need once baby is a few months older and ready to start learning some new skills. So we registered for the Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair because it literally saves sooo much space in the dining room, the NUK Learner Cup, and of course Bandana Drool Bibs because they're so much cuter than the old school bibs.

DIAPERING - This all depends on whether you choose to use disposable diapers or cloth diapers, and as you can tell, we opted for disposable. So first and foremost we chose the Munchkin Diaper Pail for our nursery and also registered for refills (x2) and scent discs (x2). Though you don't necessarily need a diaper pail this was something we decided we'd like to use. You'll also likely want a Changing Pad and a few extra Changing Pad Covers (we registered for this and this). We did choose to register for Amazon Elements Baby Wipes (x2), along with a variety of ointments for diaper rash - Boudreaux's Butt Paste (x2) and A+D Ointment or Aquaphor (x3). Last but not least, don't forget about your Diaper Bag!! We LOVE ours!

BATHING / SKIN CARE - We have opted to skip a few of the more popular brands for baby skin care simply due to our own preference, however, should you wish to do your own research on various brands, products, or the ingredients then I would highly recommend you visit EWG's database. That being said, the basics for us includes: a Bath Tub, a Hooded Bath Towel, Bamboo Baby Washcloths, and Shea Butter (x5). For the first little bit we plan to only use water when bathing our sweet girl, so we opted to use Norwex Baby Washcloths (antimicrobial and antibacterial), and once we're ready to use some baby soap, we've opted for Earth Mama Calming Baby Soap (x2). Last but not least, don't forget to stock up on some Badger Baby Sunscreen (x2).

BEDDING - This one is pretty simple these days, thanks to the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for safe sleep (skip the bulky crib bumpers and quilts, baby just needs a flat surface free of extra blankets or stuffed animals). We already had a crib, purchased our own mattress, and my talented mother made a crib skirt for us that matched our theme, so we didn't need a whole lot in this area. We opted for Waterproof Crib Mattress Protectors (x2 so you have an extra clean one to throw on for those middle of the night diaper explosions) and four Crib Sheets (we registered for this, this, this, and this). We also registered for a Graco Pack 'n Play to use as a bassinet during the first few months (as well as while traveling). Last but not least we registered for a pack of the Halo Sleepsacks (x2) as they come highly recommended to help soothe baby for a restful sleep.

NURSERY - We opted to purchase several of the larger items needed for the nursery ourselves (rug, dresser, curtains, bookshelf, etc), BUT we did put our Rocking Chair (this one is SO comfortable!!) on the registry with the intent of using our 15% off discount and buying it ourselves. Low and behold, someone bought it FOR us for Christmas, so if there are larger items you want but maybe can't afford right away, then perhaps put them on your registry as well. You never know who might purchase those for you. Other items we registered for in this category included a Hamper, a Cool Mist Humidifier with Replacement Filters, some Baby Hangers (did you know baby clothes don't fit on regular hangers?!), and some Dresser Organizer Drawer Dividers.

SAFETY / HEALTH CARE - We chose this Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor for our own reasons, so please make sure to do your research on which one will best fit your home and lifestyle. Additional items we wanted to stock up on in this department included: Philips AVENT Soothie Pacifiers (x2), a Forehead Thermometer, some Gas Relief Drops, Infants Tylenol, and an Amber Teething Necklace. We wanted to make sure we were prepared with some of the basics should a need arise.

GEAR - This category might not seem as fun initially, but we enjoyed looking at all the options and choosing what would fit our home and lifestyle best. First things first, you should absolutely register for a carseat / stroller combo (these are known as travel systems). We registered for the Graco Modes Jogger Travel System (comes with one carseat, one base, and one jogger stroller) due to it's good reviews for runners, and of course registered for one Extra Car Seat Base so we can keep a base in both of our vehicles. You'll also likely want a set of Car Baby Mirrors (x2), and depending on your vehicle, potentially some Car Window Visors. Other "gear" we chose included the MamaRoo (due to space saving size and functions), an Activity Play Mat (for tummy time), a Bouncer / Saucer, and a Tula Carrier.

FOR MOM / POSTPARTUM - I think a lot of us FTMs forget about these items when registering, but trust me when I say you'll want these on your registry LOL!! For postpartum care in general, I opted for Depends Fit-Flex Disposable Underwear and TUCKS Medicated Cooling Pads. I'll likely have to pick up some other items as needed, but I feel better having these ready to go! Other things you're going to need, and items I registered for included: a pack of Nursing Bras, some Nursing Tanks, Lansinoh Soothies Gel Pads, Lansinoh Disposable Nursing Pads (x3), and some Earth Mama Angel Baby Organic Nipple Butter (x3).

FUN MISC: - It's always fun to include some extra little items on your registry so we opted for a few Floral Swaddles (this one and this one), a Pack of Headbands, a Baby Daily Log Book, and of course the What to Expect the First Year book.

Items we chose not to register for - You likely noticed there were several typical baby items that we didn't register for so I figured I'd hit those real quick and explain why. We didn't register for a crib because we got a hand-me-down from my SIL and it was exactly the type and color we were looking for. We also didn't register for nursery decor as we chose to purchase that ourselves, BUT if you're working on a registry, I would strongly encourage you to consider adding some of the big ticket items to your registry (rug, crib, dresser, curtains, etc) as you just never know if someone might purchase those for you. You probably also noticed we didn't register for diapers and that was due to two factors: 1) there's a killer diaper fundraiser in our hometown so we stocked up on those way in advance for around $2 per pack (score!), and 2) we hosted a "Diaper Bash" for my husband and his friends to fill in any gaps (more on that in my next post). Lastly, we also didn't register for clothes, simply because people will give you clothes regardless AND because a friend of mine has twin girls just about a year older than what ours will be, so I was able to purchase tons of great quality hand-me-downs from her.

I hope you have just as much fun curating your Baby Registry as I did with ours! As always, do your own research and choose products and brands that YOU feel comfortable with. Happy researching!!

How to Get the MOST out of Your BABY REGISTRY

If you're currently pregnant or even if you're just trying to conceive, you're probably already starting to wonder about the BABY REGISTRY and all things related to it!

"Which registry should we use? Should we register with multiple retailers? What items should I put on the registry? ...Oh man...now I'm feeling overwhelmed thinking about researching said items. When should I start my registry? When do I share my registry?"

The list goes on and on LOL! I had so many questions and learned a lot from my own research, polling mommy friends, and just general trial and error. That being said, here are my top tips to get the MOST out of your registry.

1. Only register with one site (i.e. Amazon, Target, Walmart, Buy Buy Baby, etc.) I preferred Amazon for many reasons (free shipping, 15% completion discount, free welcome box, $100 in free diapers and rewards, large selection of items, and universal registry), but if you want all the deets on that, please see my previous post here about WHY we chose Amazon for our Baby Registry.

Why register with just one site? Two important reasons; ONE, it helps YOU stay organized knowing everything is all together on one site and avoids duplicates or confusion. TWO, it honestly makes it easier for gift givers to have just one place to go look instead of looking at two or three different registries. Plus in my opinion, if a gift giver has just one registry to look at then they are more apt to purchase something from the registry, where as when there are multiple registries, they often end up just buying a similar item to what they saw on one of the registries instead of the exact item you registered for.

2. Do your homework and start your registry early. If you're anything like me, you'll want to do your own research on the various products, decide what you want to use for YOUR baby, and then start curating your registry. If you wait to do this until a few weeks before your shower, you'll find yourself overwhelmed and scrambling to throw a registry together. Not my idea of fun! Instead, start your registry (and research) early on! Just because you've opened your registry doesn't mean you have to tell anyone it exists just yet. I started mine before my first trimester was even over and spent several weeks researching various items and products. Added Bonus - starting it early allows you time to change your mind. Add a floor based high chair, but decided you'd rather have a space saver high chair? No big deal, simply add and delete, and no one will know.

3. Register for the big ticket items and keep clothes, diapers, and wipes off the registry entirely. Say what?! I know, when most people start thinking about their registry they immediately want to register for diapers, wipes, and all the adorable baby clothes. Trust me, I get it. BUT, also trust me when I say I've thrown my fare share of baby showers so I feel pretty seasoned regarding this area. So WHY do this? You're going to get a ton of diapers, wipes, and clothes at your baby shower and for gifts in general regardless, even if they aren't on your registry. So if your registry focuses on bigger ticket items that you really need, then that gives gift givers the hint to strongly consider another item (i.e. your swing, your carrier, etc). Watch for my next post which will be a tell all on what all we registered for and why!

4. Following up on that notion, ask for the following phrase to be included on your baby shower invitation, "Baby is well clothed, please see the registry for much NEEDED items." This simple phrase makes a world of difference in whether you receive just a few items from your registry and then a bunch of useless junk you didn't register for, or a whole slew of items from your registry. Let's face it, no one wants to be the pregnant lady forced to haul in loads of returns because they didn't get what they requested on their registry.

**Another tip: for any shower I've ever thrown, and for the shower my besties threw me, we added a small extra slip of paper in with the invitation that read as follows: "One small request, that won't be too hard, please bring a book in place of a card. Whether Cat in the Hat or Winnie the Pooh, you can sign the inside with a note from you. Your book will be cherished whether old or brand new, but please don't feel obliged, we'll leave it up to you."  <-- this is equally as HUGE! First and foremost, books are cheaper than Hallmark cards these days, and second, why not use the event to start your nursery library!

5. Be vocal! Once you feel pretty solid with your registry selections, start being somewhat vocal about it! Not in a pushy, greedy, or annoying way, but when the opportunity presents itself, don't be afraid to voice your opinion. I can't tell you how many times someone asked us what we "really" needed with reference to gifts, and it was so much easier for us to just say, "whatever is left on the registry! We carefully selected items we truly need." You'll also encounter your fare share of opinions. Everyone has one and as soon as they find out you're pregnant, they'll be dying to tell you all about their opinion and why they're getting you the such and such product because they loved it so much and YOU MUST have it too. Kindly respond and just let them know it's so generous of them to think of you, but you and your husband have done your own research and have registered specifically for xyz because it best suits your lifestyle, your parenting style, and your needs. For example, we live in a pretty small house with very small rooms so we registered for dual purpose or compact items and tried to be as minimalist as possible. When someone complained about our "space saver high chair" and said they were going to buy us the large floor based one anyways, we simply said, "look, we registered for the space saver because it attaches to a chair that's already in our home, we literally do not have room for a floor based high chair."

**Along the lines of being vocal - when it IS time for your shower, I would encourage you to ask your hostess to create a "save the date" Facebook event so you can invite everyone a few months before the shower. Why? Obviously, A) so they get a heads up and can save the date since invitations typically only go out 4-6 weeks in advance, and B) it's a great place to note your registry so folks can start shopping it early, or save up if they wish to purchase one of your bigger items.

Whew! In a nutshell, create just ONE registry, start early and do your own research, don't register for clothes or diapers, and when approached about your registry or items, be vocal! Following these tips we received 86 of the 96 items on our registry (high number of items on registry due to requesting several duplicates - i.e. 3 packs of nursing pads or 5 tubs of baby lotion), have only had to make a few high ticket purchases ourselves, and also still have more than enough clothes, diapers, and wipes. Win win!

I really hope this was helpful for some of you, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! I'm already working on my next post which will be highlighting my registry must-haves and registry no-nos.

8 Things To Do When You Find Out You're Pregnant

You've peed on what seems like 20,000 sticks and suddenly you're shocked when you see those two pink lines! OMG I'm PREGNANT!! It's finally happening!! Wait....now what do I do???!

Who do I call first? Hubby or the doctor? Wait, do I *need* to call the doctor yet? Maybe I should pee on another stick... Oh man, this would make my due date...**calculates in head**...

LOL guys, I've been there! In a mere matter of seconds I had about a bazillion questions run through my head! If you're anything like me you want to know ALL the facts, ALL the info, what to expect, what to do, how to prepare, etc, and you want to know it all RIGHT NOW haha!! I've only been down this road once so far, but as a Type A personality, I can tell you what helped me navigate the unknown and ease my anxiety.

1. First up, I took a few extra tests, you know, just to make sure, LOL!! And in my opinion, the next step is to tell your husband so he can relish in that excitement with you! We had been trying so it wasn't a complete shock to us, BUT it was still so exciting that I ran straight from the bathroom back to my husband (who was sleeping in as it was the weekend) and whispered.."I'm Pregnant!!" I'll never forget that moment! Some people like to wait and tell their husbands with a cute outfit or a special card, or even capture the moment on camera, and if that's your thing, then girl, GO for it! I however, was too excited to hold it in, and I think sharing that raw fresh excitement with my husband just made it all the more magical.

2. Call your OB/GYN and schedule an appointment. Let them know you took an at home pregnancy test and it came back positive, and be ready to answer when they ask for the date of your last period (they'll specifically want to know the first day of your last period). Unless you're a high risk case, your OB will typically schedule you to come in around the 8 week mark. This first appointment is the longest. At this appointment you'll get a transvaginal ultrasound to confirm fetal heartbeat, you'll likely have some routine bloodwork done, your OB will ask for family medical histories from both you and your husband, and then of course they'll also document your weight, blood pressure, and have you pee in a cup. That's all pretty standard. In the meantime, the days and weeks between that first phone call and your first appointment seem like an ETERNITY!!

3. If you aren't already on a prenatal vitamin, get your hiney to the store like pronto and pick up a bottle. If you were trying to conceive, then odds are you're likely already taking a prenatal. However, if your pregnancy is a surprise then please know that starting a prenatal vitamin ASAP is one of the most important things you can do for both you AND your baby. If you have questions about which one to pick up, check with your OB.

4. Download a pregnancy app to your phone like yesterday, girlfriend! There's several out there, but my top two favorites are What To Expect (WTE) and Ovia. Each has it's pros and cons, and honestly I kept both LOL! Any app will ask for your last period as well so that it can calculate your due date for you.

**Just so you know, the magic formula is as follows: start on the first day of your last period, count backwards three months, then add 7 days. Voila! For Example: My last period was June 22, so counting back three months is March 22, add 7 days and my due date is March 29th!

The apps are helpful for sooo many reasons! First and foremost is the instant community of other women due the same month as you. You get information delivered to you based on your gestational age, which is super helpful. There's the fun "baby is the size of a ____" comparisons to look forward to each week. And of course helpful reminders to take your prenatal vitamin. Be sure to take full advantage of the message boards and forums in your app to help answer questions, concerns, etc. :)

5. Get to reading! As soon as we found out we were expecting, I immediately picked up a few books for us to read and man was that helpful! Hands down, my top recommendation is What To Expect When You're Expecting as it goes through every single detail. I still refer to it often! I also picked up The Natural Mama as I wanted some more natural remedies for various pregnancy related issues. For the hubby, I ordered Dude, You're Gonna Be A Dad and it's helped him relate to the pregnancy and various changes quite well. Plus it's fun to lay in bed together and read / learn all about some of the upcoming changes!

6. Decide when you're going to tell your parents (or close relatives) the exciting news, and when you'll announce publicly. Everyone is different and when you prefer to announce is entirely up to you. We initially decided we were going to wait until after our 8 week appt to tell our parents so we could make sure all was well, and then wait until 12 weeks to announce publicly. Only part of that worked out for us HAHA!! My brother and his fiance announced their pregnancy about two weeks before we planned to announce and in all the excitement I blurted out our news as well. Aside from that, we waited until 8 weeks to tell my husbands parents, and of course until 12 weeks to tell the rest of the world. Once you decide WHEN you want to make your announcements then you can get creative and have fun brainstorming ideas with your husband on HOW you want to break the news. Seriously, sharing that secret together is the coolest thing in the world and so hard, but so stinking amazing as well!

7. Reach out to a friend who has blazed the path before you! Preferably someone you can trust to keep your secret if you haven't gone public yet. I reached out to my three best friends (who've all coincidentally had children already) so I could have at least SOMEONE to talk to about everything and of course get all my million questions answered from a trusted source.

8. Join a due-date-specific Facebook group!! Thanks to the WTE app, I found a phenomenal Facebook group! Now, there are over 100k members in the app forum all expecting the same month as me, and countless private Facebook groups created by various members. I lucked out and joined one that happens to be smaller than most (around 170ish of us) and intimate. I've already made so many wonderful new mom friends, and have enjoyed going through this journey with each of them! It's been a true haven for me. It's a place you feel safe, understood, can vent, etc and hopefully, if you find the right group, then it's marked as a "secret" group meaning only those within the group can find it and see what goes on inside.

Whew! That's it! If my best friend hadn't already blazed this path for me, and she came to me for tips, this is exactly what I'd tell her to do as she starts out her journey into motherhood. Like I mentioned earlier, this may not be what calms your soul, but it certainly helped me! If you've read this far, thanks for hanging around! AND if you're reading this and you're expecting, then CONGRATULATIONS!!

XOXO!

Why We Used the Amazon Baby Registry

Hey Guys!! It's been awhile since I've blogged, and basically it's because I got caught up in all the excitement of our wedding and then getting pregnant the month after LOL!!! AH!! So sorry for the lapse, BUT I have so so much to share with you all! First off, today's topic, BABY REGISTRIES!!!

If you're anything like me, once you see those two pink lines (or "pregnant" on the digital HPT) then your mind immediately goes into overdrive! AH! We're pregnant!!! I'm going to be a Mommy! How should I tell my husband?! (<--we were trying so it wasn't a big surprise to him and I was too excited to try to come up with anything cute so I ran straight from the bathroom and exploded with tears of happiness) Do I need to call the doctor right this second?! Oh, I wonder what it will be! Wait, when is my due date then?! ***Calculates based on LMP then runs through everything scheduled for the next 9-12 months 😂

All that was just in a matter of 2-3 minutes HA! It's truly such an exciting time in life, and if this is your first baby, then odds are your mind will quickly also wonder over to Baby Registries. 💗

As a first time mom (FTM) I found myself overwhelmed with all the options. Of course the popular ones are Target, Buy Buy Baby, Babies R Us, Amazon, Walmart, and Babylist. Each option has pros and cons and I would suggest you do your own research on each and then to decide which one is best for you and your growing family. (You can of course register at more than one place, but I chose to register on one site only so that I could keep it all organized in one place.)

As you guessed from my blog title, we chose Amazon, so let me first explain why, and then tell you how freaking awesome it's been!! We chose Amazon for a variety of reasons:

1. We live in a very rural area, as do most of our friends and family members, so we order online a lot already and typically have multiple deliveries from Amazon each week.

2. We're obviously already Prime members, again, as are most of our friends and family members, so that gives everyone free shipping when they order from our registry.

**Unless you happen to hit the holidays where free shipping is common, most of the other options do NOT provide free timely shipping, so when gift givers order online they'll have to pay shipping on top of the gift price. PLUS, when you go to register at any one of these stores, you'll find that a good chunk of the items you want are available online only.

3. Amazon has a KILLER completion discount. Now, if you're like me, I had the hardest time trying to understand what all these registries meant when they said "completion discount." Essentially, each registry offers you an option to purchase everything that's left on your registry (aka "completion") within so many days of your due date at a discounted price. Because we are Amazon Prime members, we get a 15% discount on all the items left on our registry that gift givers don't purchase. That was by far the largest discount I found with any of the registries so it was a no brainer for us. We even put large nursery furniture items on there so we could use the discount on them once we were in the allotted purchase time frame. A vast majority of the items we registered for have been purchased from our registry (our shower is in two days, YAY!), but I'm excited about getting the rest at a 15% discount! Holla!

4. Amazon has a massive selection of items! Let's face it, Amazon is king when it comes to online shopping, and they have the largest selection of items, at least with regards to what we wanted for our baby.

5. Amazon let's you add registry items from OTHER STORES! "Babylist" use to be popular back in the day because you could compile items from various different retailers all on one list, but Amazon has bested them. With Amazon's baby registry you can easily add items from any other retailer. For example, I have several from Target on mine.

6. Amazon offers a diaper and wipes gift card! Say WHAT?! Yep, when you register with Amazon you get some pretty neat extra perks. Once items purchased (and shipped) from your registry total $1,000 or higher, then Amazon gives you a $100 gift card to use on diapers and wipes. Who doesn't want $100 worth of free diapers and wipes?! I know some people are like, but I won't have $1,000 worth of items on my registry. Girl...if you're a FTM, even trying to keep it to just the essentials, trust me, you'll have no problem hitting that mark!

7. Last but certainly not least, Amazon offers you a WELCOME BOX! Once you complete your registry with Amazon they send you the cutest welcome box full of all sorts of goodies. I got an adorable muslin swaddle, diapers, wipes, some toys, and so much more! The only caveat is that you have to purchase something of $10 value off your registry (I added the "What To Expect: First Year" book to mine since I knew I would want it anyways and purchased it), and once that item has shipped, then say hello to your welcome box!

Whew! I didn't mean to sit down and write a novel, but I did want to share what I've learned so far!I hope this helped answer some of your questions, hesitations, etc. I have so many other tid bits I'd like to share with you guys regarding pregnancy, so stay tuned for more to come! As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!

XOXO!
