10 Tips for Road Tripping With a Toddler

Hey Hey Momma Friends!! We are fresh off our first road trip with a toddler, and it was SO much fun! We traveled up the eastern coast of Lake Michigan, stopping in various lakeside towns and villages, playing, learning, and just truly enjoying a week away as a family. That being said...we DID learn several lessons for road tripping with a toddler HA!

Prior to our trip, I had searched Pinterest for some tips, and found some great ones that worked well for us, so I thought I'd compile OUR list in hopes it might help another momma on the go! :)

Let's get to it! Tip #1 - don't road trip with a toddler. KIDDING! LOL!! You guys, I was super anxious about how 7+ hours might go with our girl in the car, but it was way better than I had anticipated. Okay, for real, here we go...

1. SNACKS! All. The. Snacks. We packed a cooler with beverages (water, milk, etc), go-gurt tubes, items for sandwiches, cheese sticks, and fruit. Then also packed a tote with bread, crackers, peanut butter, puffs, yogurt bites, some easy food pouches, fig bars, and a few other random snacks. We all know "hanger" well, and it turns out toddlers are no different LOL! I have a hard rule of no eating in the vehicle when we are going about our normal routine, but we let that fly out the window for a road trip. Cleaning up cracker crumbs and spilled milk are a small price to pay for a happy rider.

2. New Toys! A friend mentioned this one to me, and it was the perfect excuse for me to buy a new toy set I'd been drooling over. I got this combo set of wooden lacing toys and they were a HUGE hit! I always keep a small tote in the vehicle with a few board books, a stuffed animal, a puzzle of sorts, and a toy. For this trip I simply rotated all the items so they were "new" to her, and then added in the new wooden lacing toys. I kept the apple in the tote, and the cheese in our restaurant kit.... which leads me to my next tip.

3. Make a restaurant kit!! So what the heck is a restaurant kit?! I had never even heard of one until I stumbled across this post on Pinterest. Check it out! I pretty much duplicated it! I ordered a tin lunch box online, and then filled it with a handful of magnets, some crayons, a magnetic drawing pad, the wooden cheese lacing toy, and a book. Guys. This idea is MONEY! It allowed us to eat out for dinner each night on our trip, and our girl was entertained without needing to play with all the condiments on the table haha!!

4. Pack your child's favorite stuffy or lovey. This seems like a no brainer, but I almost forgot it myself, and am glad we remembered it. It helped comfort her during our hotel stays, and I'm guessing made it feel a little bit more like home.

5. A tablet. This one was iffy for me. We don't do a ton of screen time and we are trying to raise a child who appreciates and enjoys the outdoors, physical activity, and learning through hands on experiences. BUT...my BFF has three little boys and travels all. the. time. and she told me I needed to take one as a back up or last resort in case we can't make headway on our trip. She also limits screen time, so I knew that coming from her and her experiences, I better go ahead and just do it. I have an old iPad mini that's literally ancient in the technology world (won it at an event in 2013), but I was able to find it, it took a charge (shocking LOL since it hasn't been used in who knows how long), and my husband downloaded the Amazon Prime Video app so we could download a few episodes of some of the PBS shows we do allow during screen time. We downloaded one episode of Sesame Street and one episode of Daniel Tiger. That's it. So our first leg of the journey was a 7+ hour drive and I figured it would go just like any of our other drives....you know...the 20 minute ones we take. Sheesh...where's the face palm emoji LOL?! What should have been the first two hours, took over FOUR hours...and I was getting frustrated and realized we could NOT do 14 hours in one day...especially when the destination was only seven hours away LOL! After exhausting all options, I pulled out the iPad. Happy little clam and we sailed right into our destination with lots of time to explore and go to the beach, find a spot for dinner, etc. Long story, well...long...it saved us our sanity while driving and helped keep her entertained, but is something we will reserve for vacation / road trips only.

6. Look for roadside parks WITH playgrounds on your route! We stopped at so many wonderful roadside parks! It allows everyone to stretch their legs, your toddler to expel some energy, and work up an appetite. What we found to work best for our family, was having Mom and Dad take turns eating while our girl played, and then feed her either right before loading back up, or if it was just snack time, then allowing her to eat her snack in her carseat after we got back on the road. After playing hard for awhile, she was usually ready to sit down and eat, and much more content to get back in the carseat if food was involved haha!!

7. Regardless of what time of year you are traveling, or what the weather is like, bring a light swaddle blanket that can be used to cover your child's legs in the carseat, AND double as an extra window shade if the sun is in their eyes. We have tinted windows WITH extra sun shades installed, and sometimes the sun still is just at the right spot that it's blinding her. A few different times I had to roll the swaddle blanket up in window and that did the trick!

8. All of these tips above are helpful, and great but really...we made the best headway when our girl was napping or sleeping. Traveling during sleeping hours makes it much easier on everyone. We traveled through almost every nap, and then on our way home, traveled through a chunk of the night (our drive home was nearly 12 hours, so we had to break it up into two days).

9. Something I had not been told, but learned quickly....pack ONE bag for hotels. We all had our own luggage pieces per usual...and when you're going to just one destination, that's no big deal. However, when you're road tripping, and moving hotels every night or every other night, NO one wants to haul in 3 bags, a pack n play, the cooler, the snack tote, etc in and out of the car every night at check in and every morning at check out. I wised up and used our beach bag (which is actually one of the smaller thirty-one totes) and threw in our consolidated toiletries bag (I use a ziplock for this), then one outfit for each person, and our jammies. That's it. So I took in one small bag, then made sure to grab a few diapers and a pack of wipes, and the milk. We can never be caught without our milk LOL!

10. My last tip really only applies if you're visiting sandy destinations LOL, but man it's THE BEST ONE! Seriously! I read somewhere on Pinterest to throw in a small travel size bottle of baby powder to use to get the sand off your body. What? This sounds dumb...I don't even keep baby powder in the house (you know, because now a days it causes cancer or something..).. Well, what do I have to lose, I hate cleaning up sand. I'll grab a bottle. GUYS! This was SUCH a lifesaver! We visited beaches every single day of our trip, so we had sand everywhere. When you're done and ready to get back in the car, just sprinkle a little bit of baby powder on the area that still has sand (usually the ankles and feet because it's inevitable to get off the beach without sand) and then just brush it right off. We were blown away by how efficient this little tip worked. So...next time you're visiting a sandy destination, throw in a small thing of baby powder. You can thank me later ;)

Alright guys...that wraps up what I learned this time around, and I seriously hope it was helpful for someone! I'm off to finally catch some zzzz's and hope my kid sleeps through the night in her crib now that we're back home LOL!

Happy Road Tripping!

XO,
Holly

Microblading 101

Hey Hey Babes! It's been awhile since I've posted, and I'll address it more later, but post-weaning depression. It's a thing, and it got me. Look it up.

Today though? Let's chat brows! Guys, I've wanted to get my eyebrows microbladed for literally TWO freaking years and I finally got them done in May, and went in for my perfecting session just a little over a week ago. I first learned about microblading not long before we got pregnant and instantly knew I wanted to get mine done, but quickly found out most estheticians won't work on someone who is pregnant or nursing. So I waited...and I researched, and watched a few friends blaze the trail before me. I learned a lot, then I got mine done, and learned more!

So many of you have asked questions about the process, where I got mine done, etc., and when I polled my IG stories last week about blog posts this topic was hands down the number one request, HA! So here we are!

So what the heck is microblading? The best way I know to describe it that it's basically like a semi-permanent tattoo on your eyebrows, using small strokes (that look like hairs) to help fill in gaps, or even create brows if you're someone without any hair. Google it!

My natural brows were super uneven, very thin, and short. I have tried for 5+ years to grow them in thicker and nothing was working, so microblading was the answer to my eyebrow prayers!

My first tip is to do your RESEARCH!! Research the procedure so you know what to expect (I'll touch on that in just a sec), but more importantly research your esthetician! Each one has likely trained differently and / or has different techniques. Check out their Instagram page for before and afters, make sure to visit their webpage and check pricing, and FAQs, just really really creep in on the person(s) because quite frankly...this is your freaking face and if you're going to have someone tattoo your face you for dang sure want to make sure they know what they're doing. Did you know in the state of Missouri, microblading isn't even regulated yet?? This is why choosing your esthetician is so so important!

I think most of you know this by now, but I chose Kelsi Allen from Bespoke Hair Co because she stood way above any others in the area regarding experience, precision, and professionalism. I'd recommend her 10 times out of 10 to anyone and everyone. You can see her client portfolio on Instagram @kelsiartistry.

So let's chat about the procedure! Any reputable salon you choose should explain the procedure in explicit detail, BUT here's a quick overview :)

I booked my appointment and paid 50% down on the service to reserve my spot. I wore full makeup (including my typical brow penciling) to the appointment so my brow artist could see my current preferences. She then expertly marked out symmetrical brow shapes showing me where she would recommend we fill, shade, wax, etc. (See photo below) The photo on the left is with the symmetry lines expertly measured and drawn on my brow bone, and I've just had the numbing cream applied. The photo on the right is after my initial appointment.

I agreed 100% with her recommendations, but if you have questions, revisions, changes, this is the step where you make those with your brow artist. After that, I sat under some numbing cream for 20 minutes, and then we got to work. It was actually such a relaxing and peaceful experience. The room is warm and inviting, and has a nice table you lay on (complete with fluffy blankets if you are cold) while my brow artist works her magic. You are numb so you can't feel anything other than your skin slightly tugging. There is a faint little clicking noise that you hear, and that I believe, is the blade working away. After a few minutes we waxed some existing bottom hairs to clean up my shape, and then my brow artist applied a few more strokes. With most artists I researched, you have an initial appointment, and then a follow up appointment (or perfecting session) 6-8 weeks later to truly perfect your brows.

After both your initial appointment and your perfecting session, there is a healing process that takes place. I was given a specific all natural organic ointment to use on my brows as they healed. During the healing process the brows get a bit darker, but don't be scared, that's literally your skin healing! The initial healing process takes approximately two weeks total, but the only thing that was annoying for me was my brows itched a bit LOL!! As you know, healing skin tends to itch, BUT it didn't last long and holy moly is my face ever different! Here is a full before and after. The photo on the left side is without makeup and you can see my sparse sad little natural eyebrows, their uneven lines, and awkward shape. [Also note my melasma (discoloration) in the photo on the left, most noticeable on my forehead, as I'll have a blog post about that and my dermatologist's recommendations soon.] The photo on the right is after my perfecting session was complete, and what I look like now.

Most of the questions were regarding the procedure, so I hope I answered those above, but for me the biggest thing??...I can't tell you how much this has changed my confidence level! I even feel comfortable going out in public with NO MAKEUP on!! Say what?! You read that right! Prior to microblading, I would wear a full coverage foundation, then do contouring, blush, bronzer, eye pencil and mascara... at the very bare minimum!! Now if I wear anything, it's just a tinted moisturizer and a few swipes of mascara. It feels DANG GOOD to have legit brows and feel confident in my appearance. If you're thinking about it, I'd suggest a consultation, and if you're local, then I hands down suggest you visit Kelsi (and tell her I sent you)! You will not be disappointed!

Alright friends, if you have any other questions, you guys know how to reach me! Until next time!

XO,
Holly

13 Things I Learned After a Year of Breastfeeding

Hey Hey Babes!! I can finally say I've successfully breastfed for 12+ months and it feels AMAZING to be able to say that! I've learned SO much along the way, and though I am by no means an expert, I do hope what I've learned through my experiences (and trial and error) can hopefully help someone! So without further ado and in no particular order...

1. It doesn't matter if you breastfeed, formula feed, or do a combo of both, people will always have an opinion about what you're doing. It super bothered me at first, and I actually got mom shamed a few times, but I learned to focus on US, and NOT on worrying about societal norms. In the words of Rachel Hollis, "Someone else's opinion of you is none of your business." You do what's best for YOU and YOUR baby, Momma! You're already crushing it!

2. Persistence can pay off! Guys, I had the ROCKIEST start to breastfeeding. Most of the moms I talked to in advance all mentioned their milk came in within the first few days. I still, to this day, don't believe my milk really came in until week 3. My babe would cluster feed, not for minutes, or an hour or two...but for multiple hours! My longest cluster feeding went on for 9 straight hours with no more than 20 minutes breaks. I felt like such a failure, like my body couldn't support my baby, and on top of the guilt I was feeling, my nips were cracked, blistered, bleeding, and just completely unrecognizable. I wanted, so badly though, to be able to succeed with this journey, so I was persistent. We supplemented with formula and had to do weight checks (our girl lost over a pound and had a rough first month trying to gain that back), and count wet diapers, etc. My husband supported me in my desire to breastfeed, and I'm so so thankful. For two weeks the latch was excruciatingly painful, and he would let me squeeze his hand as hard as I could during each latch to take my mind off the pain. He cradled me while I sat sobbing in disappointment that I couldn't do this one thing that seemed like it should be so natural. He was such a champ. Here I am, writing this at 12 months and one week post partum and I've just started the weaning process. My point is this, if you're having a hard time, but really want to breastfeed, know you are not alone. You can do this, Momma!!

3. Lactation Consultants are little gifts from heaven! When voicing some concerns in our first few days home from the hospital, one of my oldest and dearest friends told me to go see a lactation consultant. That little nudge was the single best piece of advice I have ever received regarding breastfeeding. Even though I'd read all the books and watched all the videos on breastfeeding, latching, holds, and everything in between, nothing was more helpful than sitting with a lactation consultant. She calmed my anxieties in a matter of seconds, reassured and encouraged me, and taught me things I didn't even know I was missing. I sat with her for about 30 minutes, but that 30 minutes gave me a whole new confidence in my new role as a mom. If you have even the teeniest of doubts or anxieties, then stop reading this and make an appointment right now! You can thank me later LOL!

4. Water, water, water...and then MORE water. I could NOT keep ahead of the hydration game in the early days of breastfeeding. I was easily drinking 100+ ounces of water per day and still found myself so thirsty, and needing more. Listen to your body. It gives you so many cues. I kept a jug full of water at my nursing station, and still make sure to take water with me anytime I leave the house.

5. Set up a nursing station! If you're pregnant or have a newborn, you absolutely should consider setting up a nursing station! Our house is small, so I only set up one in the nursery, but if we had a larger home or multiple levels, I'd set up multiple stations. Those first few months at home are spent doing a LOT of nursing haha! I set up my station in our nursery and had a big water bottle, a few snacks, nipple cream (alllllll the nipple cream), an extra burp rag, and a charging dock for my phone. I'd also recommend a book or some earbuds if you want to listen to a book or podcasts while nursing. I spent SO much time at my nursing station those first few months!

6. The hair tie trick! My best friend has successfully nursed three babes so I sought her out for guidance all. the. time. The best piece of advice she gave me was the hair tie trick to remember which side to nurse on at your next nursing session. Something I hadn't realized pre-birth was that if you nurse on both sides at each nursing session, you want to start your next nursing session on the same side that you ended the previous session on so that your baby gets all the good hind milk. I spent the first few weeks as a new mom religiously writing down the exact start time of each nursing session and what side, as well as the end time. It served me well for anxiety reasons but once I felt more confident in my breastfeeding journey I needed something much less time consuming, and I wasn't about to track it on some app LOL! So for the past 12 months now I've worn the exact same elastic hair tie on my wrists. I start each nursing session on the side that has my hair tie, and then when I end on the opposite, I move the hair tie over to that wrist so I know to start my next session on that side instead. It's so simple!

7. Breastmilk is magical!! I'm serious! This stuff can cure anything LOL!! Babe have an earache? Breastmilk. Babe have a scratch? Breastmilk. Babe have eczema? Breastmilk. Babe have a goopy eye? Breastmilk. I think you get the picture haha!! I could write an entire book on this, BUT there are much better resources out there, so why reinvent the wheel. If you're curious about all the amazing properties breastmilk possesses, then just do a quick google search! :)

8. SO many amazing resources, but two of my favorites are La Leche League and KellyMom! I still, to this day, have them saved as favorites in my phone web browser so I can find the answer to a question in a heartbeat. Check out both of these resources like yesterday!

9. Your view on breastfeeding may change between pregnancy and the post partum phase. I knew I wanted to feed my baby breastmilk but the entire time I was pregnant, I was just completely weirded out by it, true story, so...I actually had heavily considered exclusive pumping and then bottle feeding my baby. The baby came and she latched within minutes of being born, and my view changed immediately. I knew then I wanted to breastfeed. Especially after I watched countless friends dedicate so much time to pumping. WHOA! You EP mommas are soooo inspiring! (The time EP mommas put into pumping, cleaning the pump parts, storing the milk, feeding the milk, cleaning the bottles, etc...they're saints!) Day one in the hospital down, and I had a great first latch so I instantly had all the warm fuzzy feelings and seriously pictured this journey being such a dream. I'd have zero problems, luck me, and I'd breastfeed for the first year and wean at exactly 12 months. HA!!! My journey took a very rocky turn, as you already read, and my desire for how long I wanted to continue breastfeeding changed almost daily. Some days (very early on) I wanted to stop entirely right on the spot. Other days I set small goals, "if I can just make it through this week." Then it changed to, "if I can just make through month two." I made it to month four and thought to myself, "okay, if I can make it to month six." This continued and before I knew it I felt much much more confident in my journey and knew I'd make it to twelve months. I'd planned to wean around the 12 month mark all along, but here I am just a week after the 12 month mark and though I've started the weaning process, I'm not entirely sure how long we will draw it out. I'm equal parts excited to wean and so very sad to see this journey come to an end. I should note though, you do YOU, Momma! If you want to breastfeed for 2 days, awesome! If you want to breastfeed for 2 months, awesome! If you want to breastfeed for 2 years, AWESOME! Society will tell you you're wrong regardless of what you choose, so screw societal norms and do what feels right in your momma heart!

10. You can breastfeed anywhere! I've breastfed at a truck stop, in a pizza parlor, in front of friends, in front of family members, at church, in the grocery store parking lot, in Ikea, etc. When baby is hungry, you do what you have to do. One of the most empowering moments in my journey is when I had to nurse Harper in the middle of an insanely busy/crowded pizza parlor on a Saturday afternoon (think college football and all the people there watching the games), and my sister in law looked over at me and said, "that is so awesome!" I remember feeling insecure in that moment and her little comment, though she likely doesn't even remember it, was such a huge boost of confidence for this new momma (baby was 5 months old at the time). If you're reading this, THANK YOU, Whit!

11. Nursing bras are amazing. Nursing tanks are annoying. Before baby arrived I stocked up on all things nursing haha!! I still wear nursing bras currently, and love how convenient they are! (Side note - I've heard so many people say sports bras are just as easy and I'm here to tell you I disagree. Sports bras SUCK for nursing in my opinion.) Nursing tanks, however...those things are SO annoying! Way too many layers for me. I just felt bulky and frumpy in them.

12. Anything can be a nursing cover. So many new mommas (myself included) spend way too much time researching the best nursing covers. I ended up getting one on Amazon that doubled as a carseat cover, and while I loved it during the 4th trimester, I quickly got annoyed with how hot it seemed to make both me and baby. I quickly opted for something lighter. You can use a spit rag, a muslin swaddle (these are what I still prefer to use), a piece of clothing, two shirts, or heck you can nurse without a cover if that's your preference! When at home I never use a cover, but when in public or in front of anyone other than my hubby, I always cover up. I know many think it's not necessary, but I'm a bit of a private person and prefer to cover.

13. This journey is soooo amazing. I'm not here to knock anyone who doesn't prefer to breastfeed, because though I LOVE it, I'm a firm believer in FED IS BEST. That being said, the breastfeeding journey is simply indescribable. It's beautiful and powerful. It's calming and soothing. It's a bond that I never knew could exist, and I feel so fortunate to have had this experience!

If you've read this far, I just want to say I hope this has been helpful to you! If you have questions or need help, please don't hesitate to reach out! I'm not an expert, but I'd be happy to help you find some resources and experts in your area to help you! Please feel free to share it with a friend who needs to read it or hear these words. Last but not least, if you're a personal friend who's read this, then let me take this opportunity to thank YOU for your support in this journey! It's meant the world to me! I would not have been able to make it this far without the support of my husband and my tribe. Alright, I'm signing off before I write the world's longest blog post, HAHA!!! Thanks for reading, friends!
